Portrait Essay - Inspiration from Irving Penn

  Irving Penn's photography was what attracted me to do my portrait pictures due to the more somewhat simple nature he had in his photos, the main focus was about the people, there is next to nothing really to admire in the photos I choose other than the subject matter, the background for the most part is simple and if there are any props or anything else within the photo it is not meant to draw attention away from the subject matter but meant to help them typically in posing. What made me choose Iriving Penn's portraits are the two images on this blog. I understand that the photos are all taken in black and white but rather than taking photos in black and white I did them in an environment which had next to no light. I initially played around with flash to try to get my photos, however the camera couldn't focus on anything. Tseng Kwong Chi - Self Portrait Blog

 From what I understand from this series he did Mr. Chi in my opinion was just trying to have some fun with this self-portrait series. He decided to wear this traditional Chinese clothing in order to pose himself and seem like a Chinese ambassador who is touring these well-known landmarks and locations. Unfortunately, he passed away from AIDS young and took almost all of these photos in the 10 years before he unfortunately passed in 1990. I really like his photos as not only are they interesting but there is a lot of life and thought in them regardless of the fact that his face may be stoic and seemingly uninterested into what the Western world has to offer. The three photos I want to talk about are 2 taken from this collage above, I couldn't find the individual photos sorry, and then the Grand Canyon photo from the top of the blog.
