Portrait Essay - Inspiration from Irving Penn

Image
Irving Penn's photography was what attracted me to do my portrait pictures due to the more somewhat simple nature he had in his photos, the main focus was about the people, there is next to nothing really to admire in the photos I choose other than the subject matter, the background for the most part is simple and if there are any props or anything else within the photo it is not meant to draw attention away from the subject matter but meant to help them typically in posing. What made me choose Iriving Penn's portraits are the two images on this blog. I understand that the photos are all taken in black and white but rather than taking photos in black and white I did them in an environment which had next to no light. I initially played around with flash to try to get my photos, however the camera couldn't focus on anything. I then proceeded to use phone flashlight in order to illuminate my subject matter and from there play with shadows in order to get that strong sense of...

Tseng Kwong Chi - Self Portrait Blog

Image
From what I understand from this series he did Mr. Chi in my opinion was just trying to have some fun with this self-portrait series. He decided to wear this traditional Chinese clothing in order to pose himself and seem like a Chinese ambassador who is touring these well-known landmarks and locations. Unfortunately, he passed away from AIDS young and took almost all of these photos in the 10 years before he unfortunately passed in 1990. I really like his photos as not only are they interesting but there is a lot of life and thought in them regardless of the fact that his face may be stoic and seemingly uninterested into what the Western world has to offer. The three photos I want to talk about are 2 taken from this collage above, I couldn't find the individual photos sorry, and then the Grand Canyon photo from the top of the blog. To start with I will do the Grand Canyon one, I like this one a lot because of the fact that it is one of the few where we don't get to see Mr. Chi...

Yael Martínez

Image
Yael Martínez's photography primarily seems to be about native communities in Mexico. The Magnum Photos website says his work often "evoke a sense of emptiness, absence, and pain." I think with this photo what I feel mostly is pain, seeing how wrinkly and worn this man is I can only assume he's definitely senior citizen age or older. The fact that he serves his community being a policeman is wild, I am sure it is almost due to a mix of needing to work for money and likely out of necessity to protect his community. My grandpa is about 80 and his hands look very similar to the man in this photo, and knowing my grandpa and this man I know they both feel very proud and don't like to stop working. I can only imagine the amount of pain they have likely pushed through or likely do push through daily in order to prove that they don't need to be taken care of and can still be useful. Personally, I love this photo for the fact that I can relate it to my grandfather, but...

Alex Webb - Color and Light blog

Image
I really like this photo from Alex Webb because of the decision to make it into a black-and-white image. Not only is it a very clear photo of these I believe sunflowers but the way the look it seems they are wilting so with the decision to make this photo without color I feel emphasizes the fact that these flowers are not in the best condition. All 3 seem to be severely lacking in petals and it just may very well be that they are on somewhat of a last stand. The flowers are surviving on very minimal nutrients and are just about to shrivel up and die. The lack of color I feel really adds into portraying this, normally when you see sunflowers they are very yellow and full of petals so much so that you can tell where the sun is or should be as they rotate to maximize their sunlight but the flowers above seem to be getting by with facing solely upward. It feels almost as if they are a person who is barely managing to keep afloat in deep waters, waiting to be rescued almost. This suns...

Steve McCurry

Image
From what little I have read what I do understand is that Steve McCurry is a photographer who I would say aims to display humanity and its variety. He is the one who took the famous Afghan Girl photo and I would say he has continued to follow up on his good work and focuses on finding photos represent how different humanity is across the world.      With this picture, I assume McCurry took it to represent tradition against modernism. I don't know much about Japanese culture but what little I do know is that the kimono which is what I believe the woman above is wearing is an article of clothing that has a long history in Japan. Modern clothing is entirely different I would say with being able to mix and match top and bottom articles of clothing, from t-shirts to polos to dress shirts and shorts, jeans, and slacks, and plenty more types of clothing there is a lot of variety in our clothes today meanwhile a kimono is similar to a robe with it being one long item. Any viewer ...

Marvin Heiferman’s essay, Photography changes Everything

Reading through Heiferman's essay gave me a lot of perspective that I didn't expect to receive about photography. I thought photography was as simple as being able to and knowledgeable in taking photos. Those that know how to take a good photo understand lighting and angles as well as what settings to use in order to get clear images that can be blown up as large as necessary in order to fix the tiniest details. I figured photography and photographers just know how to take good photos people can look back upon and enjoy the memory that was created that day. Photography is so commonplace that I figure if anyone puts in the effort it can be done.      After reading the essay what I learned is that photography has multiple meanings and uses for everyone. I never really thought about how it differs through different professions whether it's for a doctor, a physicist, or even an astronomer. Photographs I have always considered to be a moment that captures memorie...
