Alex Webb - Color and Light blog
I really like this photo from Alex Webb because of the decision to make it into a black-and-white image. Not only is it a very clear photo of these I believe sunflowers but the way the look it seems they are wilting so with the decision to make this photo without color I feel emphasizes the fact that these flowers are not in the best condition. All 3 seem to be severely lacking in petals and it just may very well be that they are on somewhat of a last stand. The flowers are surviving on very minimal nutrients and are just about to shrivel up and die. The lack of color I feel really adds into portraying this, normally when you see sunflowers they are very yellow and full of petals so much so that you can tell where the sun is or should be as they rotate to maximize their sunlight but the flowers above seem to be getting by with facing solely upward. It feels almost as if they are a person who is barely managing to keep afloat in deep waters, waiting to be rescued almost.
This sunset photo from Webb is brilliant with the way the sand now becomes a purple-pink and we can see the bright orange of the sun reflected on what seems to be a small stream of water. I think what really adds to it just a bit more is the small bird that seems to be foraging amongst the sand. The image is taken very well and it really displays the natural beauty and color of nature. I think it really speaks to me just a bit more because of the beach and sunset. I have plenty of great memories growing up and going to beaches, and sunset is generally a very pretty and wonderful time to see just about anything. The color and scene alone make me feel very relaxed, almost taking me back and hearing the ocean waves crashing lightly and the slight breeze keeping you cool.
This image I like a lot because of the choice to capture a nice deep shade of red of a flower as it is only beginning to develop. The plant is at a very early stage and so we as viewers of this photo can only imagine it will become a well-developed rose that can only become even better, but for now, we get to see the petals beginning to show their color while not having yet expanded out into the flower it will get to be. The green in this image is merely a good background for the red to really shine through and get us to focus on. I like that the image is a little bit darker, the flower may not even stand out that much compared to a sunflower but in this image it works very well, the darker sort of overall tone of the image gives me a sense of uncertainty about the flower. Yes it is growing well but who knows what may happen to eventually ruin this flower, someone may very well decide to pick it and not allow it to really reach its maximum potential in its environment.
